Title:  "Never stop fighting"

Timeline: from the end of Mass Effect 1 through the beginning of Mass Effect 2

Disclaimer: the characters and storyline this is based off ALL belong to BioWare (the company that sets the standard when it comes to video games)

(I know ME3 has already come out and ME1 is old news but I don't care…..a great story, or in this case a great video game, never stops being great)

This story primarily follows Garrus Vakarian's journey starting after the end of ME1 and into the beginning of ME2.

The cargo bay of the Normandy was not in its usual "mission-ready" condition, but then, this was not a normal day aboard the now-legendary warship.  The Mako had been moved much further back than normal, to the point where it was blocking the entrance to the Drive Core.  The personnel lockers, weapons, and equipment had all been shifted back so as to create a huge empty space in the center of the room which was now occupied by a dozen chairs, a few tables, and even a make-shift chest high bar table with several stools.  And amongst all the furniture were nearly a dozen people who, just by looking at them, were obviously not related.  And yet, they seemed to share a bond that was as strong as any family.

The gang was all here: Shepard, Tali, Ashley, Garrus, Wrex, Liara, Joker, Doc Chakwas, Presley, and Adams.  The remainder of the enlisted crew had been given shore leave on the surface of the planet below.  Horizon was a great place for the crew to relax after what they had just been through, and without any officers it was twice as relaxing.

"TO SHEPARD!!!" yelled Wrex, "THE ONLY BASTARD IN THIS UNIVERSE WHO COULD'VE PULLED IT OFF…   DEAFETED THE GETH, DEFEATED SAREN, AND DEFEATED SOVEREIGN.  (giving a small chuckle) Damn, shepard you must have some Krogan blood in you."

A Cheer went up through the group as everyone raised their glass.

"Naw, I'm just as stubborn as you Wrex." Said shepard as he took a shot of a blue, glowing liquid. "GEEZE, now that has some kick!!"  Then suddenly, a tell-tale look of seriousness came over the commanders face.  Instinctively the room became quiet and all eyes were on Shepard.  He grabbed another shot glass from behind the bar that was filled with a bright green liquid, raised it up to head height and began his speech.  "To all of you, my crew… …no, not my crew, my brothers, my sisters who are the true hero's.  Without all of you there would be no Ascension Destiny, no citadel, and no victory today.  I was just the man lucky enough to have the privilege of commanding such a great crew."

"Mighty humble words coming from the man who put a 2 ounce slug through Saren's head on the Citadel, causing the shields of Sovereign to fail, allowing our fleet to destroy her." Garrus said with a twisted smile on his face.

Shepard looked over at him, and suddenly a grin spread across his face.  Then he looked forward again, and continued speaking. "And also to Kaiden.  Because of his sacrifice many of us are standing here tonight when we should be dead.  A real hero."

The entire room raised their glasses and drank to the toast in silence.  But that would be the last time the room was silent.  For this was a joyful celebration, and everyone was soon swapping stories and sharing memories.

Two of the most experienced men in the room were standing off near the edge of the bar, enjoying different drinks together, and swapping a few jokes now and then.  Simply watching everyone else enjoy themselves after such an amazing adventure brought a smile to their faces.  After several more drinks Garrus went over and joined Wrex in a discussion with Liara about "flashlight heads."  Shepard remained at the bar, he glanced over toward a table where Tali and Joker were discussing the features on Tali's suit including something called an "emergency induction port" that allowed Tali' to take part In drinking during the toast.  But to Shepard's knowledge that was the only time she had actually took a drink that night.  The remainder of the night, she just enjoyed talking with everyone else.  A subtle smile spread across Shepard's face looking at the Quarian. He then quickly looked across the rest of the room, found Garrus and joined the discussion about the Geth.

As the night progressed, a few people went back to their racks to sleep off an imminent hang-over.  Garrus and Shepard found an empty table and sat down together and continued to take shots of odd colored liquids.  Garrus had been with Shepard nearly every time the commander had left the ship.  They had found themselves too often, in the med-bay together after missions recovering from gunshots or shrapnel.  These two were closer than brothers and Garrus knew it.  He was glad to have someone like Shepard by his side.  He knew this man would never leave him behind, even if it meant it would cost him his life.

As the night went into the morning hours, more and more of the crew bid happy farewell's to go sleep off their current condition.  Around 2am the only souls left were Garrus and Shepard.  Shortly after Presley had left Garrus reached into a utility pouch on his waist and pulled out two cigars.  "Now how about you and I properly celebrate this victory Shepard…"

"Cigars!!" said Shepard with a huge smile on his face.

"Not just any cigars, Vintage cigars from Earth…" said garrus with a smirk on his face.

"How?"

"Doc Chakwas was able to acquire a couple at my request a few weeks ago.  I knew we would have a good reason to celebrate soon, and I wanted to make sure we celebrated properly."

Shepard laughed and then said, "You Turians have an amazing ability to see into the future.  Next time I put some credits on the casino tables, you're coming with me."

The two lit up and enjoyed the rich flavor of the nearly extinct earth past-time.  Then Shepard spoke, "You know Garrus, you're a hell of a soldier. Best shot with a Mantis I've ever seen.  But you're an even better friend.  I would gladly charge head first with you into a hopeless situation any day."

"We do seem to run into those situations quite often don't we?" Garrus said, "But we always end up coming out on top.  Hell, I guess a couple of guys like us are always going to find ourselves in those situations." (garrus laughs a little) "As long as there are Reapers, slavers, and any other ass holes that spread their evil and darkness we will keep charging into those situations too."

Shepard had a large smile on his face in agreement, put his elbow on the table with his hand extended out.  Garrus swung his arm in and clasped hands with his brother.

"Never stop fighting!" said Shepard.

"Never!"

They both gulped down a shot and went their separate ways to their rooms without another word.

------------------------------------

Several days later the Normandy was back to doing what it did best.  The council had tasked Shepard with hunting down and eliminating any remaining rogue geth that had followed Saren.  This mission enraged Garrus to no end.  The Reapers were the real threat and it seemed as though the council was dragging its feet every step of the way in preparing for the full Reaper invasion.  But maybe they would focus harder once the last of these damn Geth were dealt with.  After all, they had remained a threat and had caused several deaths in what appeared to be uncoordinated and random attacks.  As if without Saren or Soverign they no longer had a set goal or purpose.  And he knew as long as Shepard led them, he would do everything he could to ensure the galaxy was prepared for the Reapers.

-----------------------------------------------------

After a few months they had destroyed dozens of remote Geth outposts and even a couple Geth cruisers.  The Geth were nearly dealt with.  Garrus was ready to re-engage the real threat.  He was prepping his gear for another strike against a Geth outpost when suddenly the Ship went to red alert.  Not more than a second later the entire hull was rocked by an incredibly powerful impact.  Something Very powerful was attacking the Normandy!  He rushed toward weapons control to assess damage but another attack by the unidentified assailant nearly split the ship in two.  Recognizing the dire situation, Garrus started assisting any injured or trapped crewmembers to the escape pods as the official word went out to abandon ship.  The last man left on the cargo deck, he jumped in an escape pod and he was shot toward the planet's surface in the small capsule.  He was shocked to see the Normandy had held together this long!  As he sped toward the planet, a final blow sent pieces of the Normandy in every direction, into space and down into the planet's atmosphere.

Upon reaching the planets the surface, Garrus quickly regrouped the remaining crew and placed them in defensive positions in the event the geth or, more likely the unidentified assailant tried to finish them off.  As the last of the survivor's gathered to his beacon, he noticed Shepard was missing.  He took Wrex and Liara on a search to try and find the commanders escape capsule.  There was no trace of the commanders emergency beacon transmitter, but the cockpit escape capsule was a few miles north of the crew's main position.  It was the only place he could be.  As they neared the hilltop that overlooked the impact of the cockpit escape capsule, they spotted Joker.  Garrus reached him and helped him to his feet.  But as he helped him up, he could tell by the look on his face that something wasn't right.

"The commander…" asked Garrus.

"Spaced." Said Joker, "Man saved my life by carrying me to the escape pod."

They made their way back to the defensive position and waited.  Garrus told the other officers of Shepards' fate, then spent the rest of the time waiting for the rescue boats in silence.

-----------------------------------------------

Aboard Admiral Hackett's flagship, Shepard's burial ceremony took place.  Hundreds attended, all kinds of people, everyone from some lowly guy named "Verner" to the Council representatives.  But only a handful stayed behind after the ceremony to walk up to his coffin and say their own silent good-byes.  The last man in the room was Garrus.  He walked up to the coffin and placed a hand on the cylindrical tube.  He was hoping Shepard would reach from beyond the grave to help guide him on.  That morning they had found out that the crew of the Normandy was being split up back to their respective services and military's and the council was completely denying the existence of Reapers.  Shepard had not been dead a week and already everyone was tearing down everything he had worked to achieve.  What could Garrus do?

Then suddenly Garrus found himself remembering the night on the Normandy after the defeat of Sovereign. When he and Shepard had made that vow, "never stop fighting…"

Garrus gave a small silent nod.  "Goodbye my brother."  He turned and walked to his room, and opened a large, black case.  Inside was the Mantis V that Shepard had gotten at the Spectre equipment depo for him.  He had even equipped it with some of the best mods available.

"Never stop fighting

." Garrus said in a resolute voice.  He picked up the rifle, walked out the door to the shuttle bay and took a personal shuttle off the mighty flagship.  He knew at least one place where he could hunt down evil…
A fan-fic about Garrus Between ME1 and ME2.
